The Benefits of Calcium for Your Healthy Teeth!

Benefits of Calcium for Teeth

Calcium is one of the most crucial and abundant minerals in the human body. Besides providing the skeletal structure for teeth and bones, calcium plays a key role in the normal functioning of the body. It is important the conduction of nerve impulse, regulation of body fluids including hormones and the relaxation of muscles.

Teeth?

A majority of people around the globe consume food that is low in calcium. But what they don’t know is that they are putting their dental health at serious risk by not consuming enough every day. When the body fails to get enough of calcium, it starts taking away the one that is in the teeth and bones hence increasing your risk of cavities and tooth decay. 99% of calcium found in the human body is stored in the teeth and the bones so when the body is experiencing low calcium, those are the two areas that suffer. Consuming diets that are low in calcium also increases your risk of periodontal disease as well. Also, with an insufficient amount of calcium, the jaw bone is also at risk. Calcium deficiency in the body also causes weakening of the teeth leaving you at even higher risk of gum disease.

How Can You Get Calcium?

Certain forms of calcium that are directly applied to the teeth can repair and strengthen enamel and enhance beneficial effects of fluoride. However, most of the minerals that you will be supplying to the bone and teeth will come from your diet directly. Here is some foods that are good sources of calcium:

– Fish: Especially Salmon and sardines (with bones)

– Dairy foods: cheese, yoghurt and milk

– Pudding

– Calcium-forfeited bread and juice

– Leafy vegetables: broccoli, kale, collard greens

There are also a few things you need to consider to enable you to get the right amount of calcium to your body. Watch the amount of soda you drink on a daily basis. This is not only a great idea for the betterment of your teeth but consuming a lot of soda results to raising the levels of phosphate in the blood. This can filter calcium on your bones and prevent any absorption of new amounts of minerals.

It is also paramount that you consume the right amount of vitamin D. Calcium is only absorbed and used by the body when there is enough vitamin D in the system. Consuming a balanced diet should provide the body with the right amount of vitamin D. For this, eat foods such as eggs and fortified orange juice. Another good source of vitamin D is sunlight. With enough of sunlight exposure, an additional source of foods may not be necessary.
